Genetic Influences in Susceptibility to Depression

The Archives of General Psychiatry has just published a U-M meta-analysis that adds to the evidence of a connection between an individual’s ability to respond to stress and a gene that regulates serotonin. The study (supported in part by the Depression Center) was led by Srijan Sen, MD, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, and also included Margit Burmeister, PhD, professor of psychiatry and human genetics and MBNI research professor. The study has been featured in stories by the New York Times, the L.A. Times, ABC News, and TIME Healthland.

Sen was also featured in a Fox News story about possible scientific breakthroughs in the new year, including the potential identification of new genes and proteins involved in depression.
